Watercolor Experiment Continues...

My experiment with watercolor keeps continuing, and as I do more and more, the learning is immense and teaches me what to do first and what next, as a step by step approach. Most important it teaches me patience to wait for a day to dry completely and then apply the next layer. This painting was done whenever had some 15-30mins free time, did not do in single stretch. Obviously friends and colleagues in office appreciate, but only I know where the mistakes are :) and ofcourse a professional would easily find them. As always your critics are welcome to improve myself.

Radha Krishna - Experiment on Watercolor

Guess what I did this weekend? yeah its again Radha Krishna in watercolor. This appeared to be easy at first sight, since I dont have to draw the real face, but ended up really difficult in preparing the background with those dark colors. I should have used masking fluid to cover the main picture and played around with the background dark colors, its ok, another learning. experiment continues...

Peacocks - Color Wash

Another art which attracted me while browsing, must be a colorwash, so tried to keep my drawing board horizontal and did a color wash. Even though I could not match the original art, am satisfied with the result I got, for my serious third watercolor drawing.

The Peacock Dance - Watercolor

The more and more I search for watercolor arts, the more I get inspired with the creativity and techniques used and trying my hands. After a long time, got a free weekend to explore watercolors. It looked simple when I saw, but when tried, the actual effort was known. Will surely try one more of the same drawing, with the learning I got from this drawing.

Radhe Krishna - Watercolor

Quite for a long time I have been thinking to try my hands on watercolor, have been trying lot of techniques but yet to master them. First time trying Lord Krishna with Radha in watercolor, took long time leaving breaks for the colors to dry, to apply layers, required patience. Learned how the strokes and colors look after drying, ones looking dark are not goin to be really dark after drying :), I know there are lot to improve, please provide you suggestion and tips on where to improve and is there any other technique I can try to make it even better.

Jallikattu Series

January being the season of farmers in southern part of India, there is celebration for a week. Highlight of the festival season is the Bull Taming (Jallikattu) conducted in various parts of village. Youngsters are lined up not just for the game, but it proves their braveness, ofcourse there are people who jump out of the field. With all these new actions over the internet, why not put them on drawing and here are few of the actions using Charcoal stick as medium.

"India Today" Coverage - Self Taught Artist

Mylapore Fest -

Mylapore can rightfully claim to be the soul of Chennai city. Mylapore retains the look and feel of an old neighborhood, the culture and heritage typically south Indian, yet it has not escaped development. This place that is proud of its arts, culture and tradition and people is just the setting for a cultural festival.

Mylapore Festival 2014 happened during 2014 Jan 9 - 12, where Chennai Weekend Artist (CWA) exhibited 100+ original art works from various medium like charcoal, watercolor, acrylic etc. We also had color prints of all sketches priced low next to the originals. First time we tried printing on art board and created photocard. I had 4 of my photo cards on sale during the exhibition. Another great experience starting of 2014.

Highlight of the festival was Water color demo by Nirupam Konwar, Acrylic demo by Jeevanathan.

Flashback - A Tribute to Cinema

I got a wonderful opportunity to participate in Flashback - Tribute to Indian Cinema, conducted by Anna University and Ethiraj College - Media Science department students. They had a collection of 4000+ photographs all related to early cinema history. This was to honour 100 years of Indian cinema history. They had display of projectors, camera, editing machines etc etc as exhibits, it was wonderful to know how cinema evolved and it is now.

Chennai Weekend Artist (CWA) was invited to exhibit sketches of old movies in artistic way, we had almost 200+ entries and 80+ were selected to exhibit, including two of my sketches. It was really a exciting experience and my first display in an exhibition. Puthuyugam TV covered the whole show which happened during last week of December 2013.

Syberian Director Goran Paskaljevic inaugurated the exhibition and other Celebrities like Padmasree Kamal Hasan, Goutami, Nasser, Editor Lenin, Director Ram, Director/Actor Sasikumar, Director Cheran, Director Atlee, Kalaimamani Film news Anandhan, Art Director Mr. Trotsky Marudu and many more visited and wished the students. Happiest moment was when Padmasree Kamal Hassan was looking at my charcoal sketch of Moonram Pirai Scene.

Om Nama Shivaya - Pencil Sketch

I am still struggling to get the realism, while drawing face, so mostly I never try sketching portraits. But this time I came across a wonderful drawing using white color pencil on a black medium, not sure it could be chalk also. I was really impressed by that drawing, and had in mind to replicate the same using pencil. And the day came, when I had to gift my friend, who is devotee of Lord Shiva, thought what special I can gift and sketched this.

The original picture I used did not have face, so it was easy for me to replicate the complete drawing without face. Everyone asks me to complete the sketch with face, but I dont want to lose the charm putting in my own creativity :)

Alexander, Porus, Bucephalus - The Climax

Bucephalus should be favorite epic character for everyone of every age. He is the majestic horse Alexander the great rode and won his battles. Poor ending was Bucephalus, died on war land fighting against Porus, Indian King who had war elephants. Bucephalus was firghtened, still he managed to continue fighting. If you want Alexander movie, this one last scene where his majestic black beauty jumps over to the elephant.

For a long time, I had this in my back floor to sketch, finally got time to complete this for this weekend. I did not draw this in detail size, this is A4 size and tried to depict the scene to the extent I can. Please your comments are welcome. Used 3B, 4B to complete this sketch.

Lord Vinayaka - Quick Sketch

This sketch was pretty quick, on a friday night started around 11pm and completed in 1.5hrs. Wanted to start straight away with the darker shades and decided to use only 3B Faber Castell pecil, with very light strokes and then fill up the shades.

Lord of Dance - Nataraja

Nataraja - in his unique dancing poses are really amazing and mesmerizing. There are lot of thandavam poses and I believe the most familiar one to me is the Anandha Thandavam. I tried sketching the pose in full front view initially, but there seem to be a lot of sketches in front view, so thought why not I try in a different angle, either from top or side or bottom angle. Finally this angle looked great and gave me a divine gigantic feel, and decided to sketch.

After scanning, wanted to give a final touch and added the black borders, like a cinema-scope effect :), now this is my desktop wallpaper.

Used 4H and 2B for this sketch. Please provide your comments on how to and where to improve my sketching skills.

Jai Anjaneya - Pencil Sketch

First let me thank all of you for giving your thoughts and time to reply to my earlier attempt to sketch Lord Hanuman in a  different perspective. This time, our regular "Hanuman Ji" whom we have seen all these years in TV serials and movies.

I found this drawing while searching for some rare character illustration of Lord Hanuman, only difference from the original drawing is I changed his weapon (gada) to look circle shape, because the one I used as reference was more looking like umbrella (Thanks to Muthu for giving this suggestion).

I completed this sketch in 4 hours in one full stretch :) earlier had plans to do it in two phases, but once I had the layout, it drove me to complete immediately. Used 4H for layout and 2B 95% for shades and rarely 8B, all Faber Castell pencils..

Lord Hanuman - A different approach

Before you start reading, look at the drawing and try to figure out what I have tried to depict, and let me know your thoughts in comments.

We have all seen modern Lord Hanuman, in TV serials and movies, most of the films have depicted his structure similar to human with monkey face. Actually if we analyze more, Hanuman is actually "The Monkey God", his body should be very similar to monkey with hands almost in the same size like legs, he should be bigger than any human during that historical period. While we characterize him during historical period, I made an attempt to depict his weapon like a bush man's weapon made of stone and wood.

I took 5 hours to complete this sketch, using 4H, 2B, 8B pencils. Now open for your comments :)

Cattle Fair - Rajasthan

Murali Alagar, my friend from CWA (Chennai Weekend Artist) visited Rajasthan as part of his photoshoot and has clicked wonderful shots, I admire the angle and view he captures for any shot he takes, especially when he shoots any landscape. My earlier post of Shiv Linga (Lepakshi) was also inspired from one of his photos. He keeps impressing others by his unique clicks and this cattle fair is one in them. After seeing this, I wanted to do a pencil sketch of this angle and guess have drawn it to some extent. This is the first time am trying to do landscape and hope it came out well, here it is for your comments. Used 2B, 5B and 8B for this pencil sketch.

Alexander and Bucephalus

For a long time I have been thinking of portraiting epic character, that too Alexander the great and am crazy on his black beauty, Bucephalus.

The moment I searched for Alexander, wikipedia had a wonderful portrait of Alexander tamming his Bucephalus, got attracted towards the drawing I tried to depict it in my style and here it is for your critics. I used 5B and 8B for the shades.
